An experiment as carried out for two consecutive seasons (2001/2002 and 2002/2003), at the Demonstration Farm of the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research Institute at Shambat (Khartoum North), to investigate the best time of umbel picking and the best dose of fertilizer for growth of sweet fennel (Foelliculu11l vulgare Mill.) and to determine the oil percentage of the seeds and their content of anethol. Addition of 24 tons/ha of chicken manure and chemical fertilizers containing 181.6, 120 and 120 kg /ha NPK, respectively, resulted in significant increase in growth, seed yield, oil content and percentage of anethol in the oil. The results showed that more oil was produced when umbels were harvested at the green mature stage and that the anethol content increased with maturity
