In a mature European beech stand on Mt Blego_ (1250 m/asl), wood quality of the lower fourth part of the stem was assessed. The stand was approved as a selected seed stand in 2004 (Id. No. 4.0185) and subsequently trees with forked stem and twisted fibres were cut in order to reduce the number (%) of trees with phenotypically negative characteristics. After three years we studied the wood quality structure and its gross value. The estimation was made on 2-are plots covering 12.4% in one part and 13.0% of surface area in the second part of the stand. We classified wood quality in the lower quarter of the stem with respect to the mean diameter and to the share of red heart at the fifth part of tree height. For the red heart calculation, the equations after Torelli (1984) were used. The study showed that there is no significant difference in wood quality structure and gross value between thinned and unmanaged stands on similar sites. However, in spite of the extreme forest site, trends were shown that thinnings do contribute to the enlargement of DBH of the selected trees.
