The study evaluates the influence of hen breed on egg shape. It was examined if the analysis based on the EFDs (elliptic Fourier descriptors) is efficient for evaluating the hen breed as a factor influencing the egg shape. The eggs of three hen breeds (ISA-Brown, Hisex Brown, and Moravia Barred) were tested. Digital images of the eggs were acquired and comparative analyses of eggs shape variability was performed by image analysis, employing principal components analysis of EFDs. The first four principal components provide a good summary of the data, accounting for 97.19% of the total variance in the case of ISA-Brown breed, 94.21% of the total variance in the case of Moravia Barred, and 94.02% of the total variance in the case of Hisex Brown. The egg shape analysis employing principal components analysis of EFDs represents the powerful and precise tool for variation quantification. Egg shape shows continuous variations among hen breeds and can be treated as a quantitative trait.
