The field trial was carried out during the period of 2004-2006 in the Second experimental field of the Institute of Forage Crops, Pleven under non irrigated conditions. The objective of the experiment was to investigate the economic characteristics of maize hybrids from the FAO mid-late and late group and their suitability for grain production under the conditions of the Pleven region. The trial was laid out by the block method with four replications and a record plot of 10 m2. Eight maize hybrids were studied belonging to two FAO hybrid groups - mid-late Кn-511, Кn-512, Кn-517 and Кn-М530 and late Кn-601, Кn-611, Кn-625, Кn-683А. It was found that under the climatic conditions of the Pleven region the highest grain productivity, as well as suitability for cultivation accordingly, was shown by the hybrid Кn-683А from the FAO late group, the yield of which was equal to 9958,0 kg/ ha. In the mid-late group the highest-yielding hybrid was Кn-511 – 9346.3 kg/ha. The crude protein content in grain of the mid-late group of hybrids varied within narrower limits from 10.60% tо 11.21%, as compared to the hybrids from the late group from 10.02 % tо 11.72 %. No significant differences were observed between the studied hybrids with regard to content of crude fiber, calcium and phosphorus in the grain.
