The present study was conducted on two sample plots located in the region of Pirdop Zlatitsa – a mixed stand of Scots pine and Beech and a pure Beech stand. By 1996 ambient air was polluted with SO2, sulfuric acid aerosols and dust, which was a prerequisite for a direct negative impact on them. The reduction of air pollution level since 2000 had limited the risk of a direct impact of air pollutants on vegetation. The risk of soil contamination still exists- in the coniferous stand the concentration of copper and arsenic increased as well as in litter the copper content is 100 times the toxic level. In the soil under the deciduous stand a polycomponent contamination with highly toxic heavy metals was registered and the reaction of the soil solution was extremely acidic. Copper content in litter was 15 times the toxic level and that of lead, cadmium and zinc was also high. High concentrations of copper, zinc and manganese in Scots pine needles was also determined although a descending trend since 2000 had been observed.
