Data on the content of iodine in different types of sphagnum mosses (Sph. fuscum; Sph. magellanicum; Sph. angustifolium; Sph. balticum; Sph. apiculatum; and Sph. cuspidatum) collected in autumn at the large peat bogs of upper layer fields in different regions of the Republic of Belarus were presented. Iodine is an important element which is required for Belarusian soils and crops. Research results showed that sphagnum mosses and peat basing on them had much higher content of iodine than meadow grasses and agricultural vegetable, cereal and other crops. It was noted, that iodine level in sphagnum mosses differed substantially depending on their botanical variety and growing conditions of microtopography; but on case of peat the same index depended significantly on the degree of its decomposition. Experiment results showed that iodine in peat composition is connected with its humic complex. Taking into consideration, that sphagnum peat is used in the form of ameliorant of soils, nutrient grounds and substrates, the last-mentioned could be used as iodine sources in plant growing. Application of sphagnum peat could render the positive influence on the quality of vegetables, melons and gourds, leaf vegetables and other agricultural products used for animal feeding and human nutrition
