The organic solvents influence on the content and ultrastructure of lipophilic coating of perisperm-endosperm (PE) seed covering of cucumber (Cucumis Sativus) is analyzed. The wax extraction and mechanical alteration are two possible ways in which organic solvents can influence PE envelope permeability have been revealed. The chemical characteristics of different solvents are shown. The component structure of the cuticular waxes after the solvent's processing is displayed. The structural changes of the perisperm-endosperm seed covering after the organic solvents processing are shown and analyzed. The ripples and splits appearance on the perisperm-endosperm surface shows the seed permeability increase. The mechanism strongly depends on the nature of the solvents. Non-polar solvents, particularly chloroform, improve the PE envelope permeability by exhaustive extraction of waxes from the envelope. Polar solvents (acetone, methanol, ethanol and pyridine) cause a mechanical alteration breaking the integrity of the cuticular layer of the PE envelope.
