In the conditions of the Republic of Belarus there was realized the determination of efficiency of the increasing doses of selenium application in soil on yielding capacity and hay enrichment of perennial grasses (cocksfoot grass (Dactylis glomerata) and timothy grass (Phleum pratense)) with this element. The research was realized in 2007 - 2010 on the experimental plot in Uzda district of Minsk region on sod-podzolic loamy sand soil. Agrochemical characteristics of soil plow horizon: humus content – 2.05 – 2.15%, P2O5 – 120-150 mg/kg of soil, K2O – 180 -200 mg/kg of soil, gross selenium content – 30 – 40 mg/kg. As a result of realized research it was revealed that application of sodium selenite to soil with low selenium supply (30-40 mkg/kg of soil) before sowing of perennial cereal grasses was an effective way of hay enrichment with selenium. The selenium content on the optimal level for feeds in hay of cocksfoot grass (101.8 – 167.6 mg/kg) and hay of timothy grass (110.7 – 134.4 mg/kg) was obtained in the first hay cutting in the first year of using in doses of 200 and 300 g Se/ha, in the second hay cutting – only in hay of cockfoot grass after dose of 300 g Se/ha. On the second year of grasses using in course of application of selenium in doses of 100–300 g Se/ha, the content of selenium in hay of grasses did not reach an optimal level, but was above of the background level in the average on 1.6–3.5 times that was very significant for selenium-deficiency zones.
