The problem of competitive ability of products at present takes one of the central places in the economy. In scientific literature there were a lot of approaches regarding the notion and essence of competitive ability. In coarse of the research there was studied the presents critical review of different versions of the notion 'competitive ability of product', established their drawbacks and weak points. Qualities and characteristic traits of this category were determined. On the basis of above-mentioned features improved definition of the term 'competitive ability of product' was suggested: competitiveness is a relative size as it can be defined only as a result of comparison of the products; competitiveness is a dynamic size as its major property is change in time; competitiveness dependence on a life cycle stage on which there are considered product. The main components of competitive ability of product are its consumer properties (cumulative quality) and the price. Competitive ability of product as an economic category should be considered in dual aspect - from a position of consumers and the manufacturers, nevertheless the solving word remains behind the consumer.
