Milk urea concentration as a predictor of reproductive performance in dairy cows?

The principal aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between milk urea concentration (MU) and fertility in dairy cows. Holstein and Czech Fleckvieh cows after their third lactation were examined. The relationship between MU at first insemination and reproduction indexes was very low. MU at conception was related to reproduction in both breeds, but the effect was opposite. In Czech Fleckvieh cows the most favourable reproduction indexes were associated with the lowest MU, whereas it was the contrary in Holstein cows. In conclusion, MU should not be recommended as a predictor of reproductive performance in dairy cows.
