The objective was to evaluate the impact of gestation housing on gilt body condition and reproductive performance. A total of 26 stall-allocated (T1), 30 pengrouped with droop feeding system (10 gilts/pen) (T2) and 26 pen-grouped with an automatic trickle feeding system (10 gilts/pen) (T3) gilts were used. Back fat (BF) was measured at day 15 and 109 of gestation and at day 15 of lactation. Farrowing and lactation performance and the subsequent wean-to-estrus interval (WEI) were registered. T3 gilts had higher BF at day 109 of gestation (20.3 vs. 15.0 and 15.3mm; P<0.0001). T2 gilts had lower percentage of Stillborn piglets (3.1 vs. 6.1 and 6.8%; P<0.05), whereas T-1 gilts lost less BF during lactation (1.7 vs. 2.5 and 3.0mm; P<0.05) and had more number of gilts with less than 6 days of WEI (92.3 vs. 88.5 and 74.1%). In conclusion, it is important to monitor correctly gilts body condition in gestating housing systems to avoid compromise sow's reproductive performance.
