Increasing milk production is the purpose of dairy cattle sector, and more milk produced means more profit gained. The immunity of the pregnant high-producing dairy cows during the peripartum period is important for a healthy postpartum condition. In order to study the effect of milk production on the peripartum immunity, 102 pregnant cows with High (>45 Liters/day, n=46) and Low (<=45 Liters/day, n=56) milk production were used. Six blood samples were collected by tail vessel puncture during the peripartum period every 15 days, four during the last two months of gestation and two during the first postpartum month. Samples were automatically analyzed with HemaVet Multispecies Hematology system and leukocyte counts were recorded. Data was statistically analyzed using GLM repeated measures ANOVA to test the effect of milk production on leukocyte counts. Cows with high milk production had lower total leukocytes (P<0.01; Between-group effect) and lymphocytes (P<0.001; Betweengroup effect) during all the study period than cows with low milk production. The lower peripheral total leukocytes were caused mainly by lower lymphocyte numbers. It could be hypothesized that that the high producing udder is attracting more lymphocytes to provide protection against mastitis caused by opportunistic organisms, ex. E. coli and other bacteria.
