A group of boars from the same Duroc line breed was associated with a reduction of the fertility in commercial farms averaging from 90 to 75%. The sperm analysis at the artificial insemination centre only detected a moderate reduction of the motility and increased number of spermatozoa with morphological abnormalities. A more thorough study compared seminal samples from 9 of these boars (problem) with other 6 boars (control) that were maintained and managed in the same way. Results indicated a significantly reduced motility in the problematic boars and the pattern of movement exhibited lower linearity and straightness, higher amplitude of lateral head movement and lower beat cross frequency. The sperm morphology was characterised by a higher number of spermatozoa that presented an abaxial implantation of the intermediate piece. The viability was reduced and a higher lipid membrane disorder was detected. However, no differences were found for acrosome status and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In addition, Duroc boars presented a higher condensation of chromatin and a lower in vitro fertilizing capacity. These results suggest the alteration in the sperm functionality of these boars that could be related to a significant reduction in reproductive outcomes.
