The efficacy of topical ivermectin (IVM) on foals naturally infected by parasitic nematodes was evaluated. Two dosages of IVM were applied, one pour-on (F-Nor1; 1 mg/kg/bw) and another orally (F-Eq0.2; 0.2 mg/kg/bw). The efficacy was measured by estimating the reduction of the fecal egg counts (FERC). Several biochemical and enzymatic serum parameters were measured in the groups F-Nor1 and F-Eq0.2. The oral ivermectin suppressed the egg-output of strongyles at the 4th dat, whereas in the F-Nor1 occurred by the 8th. Values over the normal range were only achieved for creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). The levels of blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, total proteins, albumin, globulins and, specially, LDH decreased after the administration of IVM. A significant positive correlation between the cyathostomin fecal egg-output and the LDH was probed. No adverse clinical reactions were observed in the horses receiving topical IVM. It is shown that measuring the levels of the LDH activity may assess the damage caused by cyathostomins at the gut level.
