In the near future Latvian cereal breeders will make appraisal of the retrospective acquisition of the activities accomplished in 100 years in the State Priekuļi Plant Breeding Institute founded in 1913 and the State Stende Institute of Cereal Breeding founded in 1922. Plant breeder's job has always been closely connected with development of economic and scientific processes going on in Latvia and the world. Wide knowledge and experience accumulated for years are necessary to breeders of new varieties. Only improvement and development of breeding methods, following to latest findings in science, can provide good results. Success was followed by failure however a gene pool of Latvian cereals has been created in the course of many years. It is not only a historical collection, but also a stable foundation for scientific researches and further plant breeding activities. Till 2010 in Priekuļi and Stende, 16 winter and 11 spring breeds of wheat have been created and are at farmers' disposal for valuation. Achievements of several generations of Latvian wheat breeders have been summarized in this publication.
