Grey alder (Alnus incana) wood is currently used in Latvia mainly as firewoodaw material for production of charcoal. Hence, an interest recently has been arisen at utilizing this wood for obtaining other products, for example hemicelluloses (HC). HC along with cellulose and lignin are main wood constituents. HC of different plants have been of considerable interest in recent years as a raw material for a broad range of application - for using them as gelling, stabilizing and emulsifying agents in pharmacy, cosmetics and food industry. The task of our investigations was to evaluate possibility of utilize of alder HC as thickening and emulsifying agent in some skin-care products. For the isolation of HC approximately 20 years old alder wood sawdust, extracted with ethanol/acetone mixture 1:1 were used. HC were isolated at treating of wood with 7% potassium or sodium hydroxides solutions during 3 h at 20 deg C. Besides that, there were used also other isolation regimes in the temperatures boundaries 4-50 deg C. For the HC isolation laboratory equipment, as well as pilot-scale reactor with volume 25 l were used. The yield of both fractions was 17-18% from the owen-dried wood at using laboratory equipment and 15-16% at using pilot scale reactor. The alder hemicelluloses can be used as thickeners and emulsifiers in formulas of some hygiene remedies.
