Aboveground carbon stock estimates of rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) plantation at Makiling Forest Reserve [College, Laguna, Philippines]

This paper highlights the study that measure the aboveground carbon stock estimates of rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) plantation in MFR, Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines. Secondary data from systematic quadrat sampling technique was used to calculate aboveground (tree) biomass and estimate the carbon content of the 22-hectare MFR rubber plantation. The tree biomass was computed as 9988.10 cu m. Its carbon stock, following the conservative estimate of about 45% (Lasco et al 2006), was 4494.64 cu m. Using Brown(1997) and Brown et al (1989) allometric equations, carbon content per hectare was calculated to be 202.50 tons, giving a total carbon of about 4454.95 tons. Forty-one per cent of the total computed carbon was attributed to rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) trees which dominated the site for almost two to three decades. Recent assessment suggests that thinning and pruning of competing and overtopping non-rubber trees and restocking of unproductive portions within the plantation are necessary to maximize the latex production and carbon sequestration potential of the said rubber plantation.
