Value chain on industrial agroforestry - an innovative research model

The forests in India are shrinking under acute socio-economic pressure, which resulted in low forest cover of 23.55 percent against the mandated requirement of 33 percent. Not only is the forest wealth of India poor but the productivity in terms of mean annual increment (MAI) is meager, with 0.5 to 0.7 cu m/ha/yr compared to the global average of 2.1 cum/ha/yr. India's low forest cover coupled with poor productivity has ushered in a total mismatch between the demand and supply of both domestic and industrial wood requirement. Against this back drop, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has designed a new research model, 'A Value Chain on Industrial Agroforestry' in a consortium approach to augment the production to consumption system in forestry. This research model has made significant achievements in terms of designing a Quad Partite model-Contract Farming System, identification of new and alternate genetic resources and their associated value chain management. The Quad Partite had benefited 207 farmers through horizontal expansion. For alternate genetic resources, potential pulp wood species were identified based on pulp recovery. Alternate match wood species also exhibited match stick recovery and improved color or strength. The plantation residues of Casuarina species promoted through industrial agroforestry have been successfully value-added through briquetting technology. Similarly, the match wood industrial residues also value-added through the same technology augmented the utility of under-utilized biomass for value-added energy resources. The multi-partite supply chain has now been regulated as Quad-partite model involving the financial institution as partner through provision of credit facilities to the contract farmers of pulp and match wood species.
