Assorted high value vegetable(HVV)such as cabbage, bulb onion, carrot and cauliflower were tested and integrated under rainfed rice based farming in the province of Zamboanga del Sur. This is to evaluate the potential of growing HVV after harvesting rainfed rice in the province. Each crop was established in a 1000 sq. meter area in each site in the month of December 2008 or dry season period in the area following the required cultural crop practices locally developed at Betina Research Station(BRS).Results show that among the four crops being tested, only cabbage and bulb onion were identified as adaptable in the area and fit to be utilized or integrated in the rainfed rice-based farming in the province. Cabbage alone has revealed and impressive yield in both sites with 20.9 and 31.2 tons/ha. Bulb onion performs even better and obtained a yield of 16.8 tons/ha and provides net returns of more than Php 400,000.00. These further shows that said crops can be grown not only in areas with lower temperature but also in areas with higher temperature provided that their required cultural management will be met.
