Lower quality and diameters of logs, also some other factors, have caused application of computer technologies in sawmill wood conversion in order to reach the goal of better productivity and higher yield. Application of scanners is necessary for finding out positions of different defects in logs before primary wood processing. The best results are achieved by using computer tomography i.e. application of X-rays scanners. The usage of CT scanning is more suitable for softwood logs than for hardwoods. The biggest handicap for the wide usage of this technology is unrecognition of wood defects that have similar density like surrounding normal wood, also high price of technology itself.
