In the paper the research results are presented of analyzing timber moisture contents measured by in-kiln moisture meters and by gravimetric (oven dry) method. Research on 50 mm thick beech timber was done in industrial kiln and on 38 mm timber in laboratory kiln. Results confirmed that moisture content values given by in-kiln moisture meters (MC probes) are not accurate above fiber saturation point. Those values are always lower than values determined by gravimetric method. The error increases together with initial moisture content. Combination of using oven dry test above fiber saturation and in-kiln moisture readings below that point is recommended. Users should test their kilns in similar way to find out real error of in-kiln moisture meters. On the basis of that knowledge, they can make correlations of drying schedules in some phases of the process.
