Genetic transformation of Impatiens hawkerii plants with Agrobacterium tumefaciens C58C1pac1, with the aim of stable integration of the pac1 gene into the genome, its expression and generation of virus-tolerant plants was studied. The application of higher concentrations of kanamycin during the selection process caused growth retardation and development of few lateral buds and roots. The explants inoculated for two hours and grown on a medium supplement with CPPU thrived the best. A rapid decay of transformants on selective medium has been observed, while none of the clones survived the fifth passage. The necrosis of the plant cells transformed with Agrobacterium may be a consequence of either high sensitivity of this species to kanamycin or unsuccessful transformation.
