Pocitelj area (Bosnia and Herzegovina) is characterized by a number of medicinal plant species containing active substances. These active substances can be used as a sure guide to a healthy life as well as drugs. The modern trend of returning to nature and natural way of life imposes new challenges for food manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies which are expected to produce products of natural origin with less synthetic additives. In the Pocitelj area about 80 plant species with medicinal properties are found. The process of sustainable development in this are should be directed to environmentally acceptable method of maintenance of resources, which means to use medicinal plants to the extent that does not jeopardize the balance of ecosystems.
