The most important phytoplasma diseases of fruit trees in Europe are apple proliferation, European stone fruit yellows and pear decline. In Serbia research of phytoplasmas based on molecular techniques begins in 2003 and since than the most important fruit species are examined. Apple proliferation was detected in apple trees, European stone fruit yellows in apricot, European plum and peach trees, stolbur phytoplasma in peach and pear decline in pear trees. Of all detected phytoplasmas, Candidatus Phytoplasma prunorum, the causing organism of European stone fruit yellows, is the most outspred and important in Serbia. The best common measure for control phytoplasmas of fruit trees is healthy planting material, and in the case of pear decline vector control is effective.
