Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) was once a numerous and widely distributed bird in the mountainous areas of Serbia (Šar Planina, Prokletije, Stara Planina, Zlatar, Tara, Zlatibor, Golija and Kopaonik). The main reasons of the sudden decrease in its population, and its extinction from some localities were the heavy forest exploitation (felling), construction of forest roads, suppression of coniferous species, severe forest wildfires, disturbance and excessive hunting. In modern times (2003), the estimated minimal and maximal populations amounts to 10-15 pairs in the region of central Serbia, and 60-70 pairs in the region of Kosovo and Metohija. Thanks to its low abundance and a high risk, capercaillie has been designated the natural rarity in Serbia and protected by permanent hunting prohibition. This paper analyses the main threats and protection measures of capercaillie and its sites at the national and global levels.
