Occurrence and spreading of weeds are greatly influenced by climate factors. Various types of weeds occur and spread with different intensity depending on moisture conditions. The aim of this paper is to indicate wet and dry periods, territories they affect and the time of their onset. Periods with excessive moisture and drought are determined through the drought index, that is, moisture index. Palmer's drought indices were used, Z and PDSI, as well as standardized precipitation index (SPI) for the periods of three and six months. Obtained results show that mostly normal or wet weather conditions were characteristic for the territory of Serbia in the seventies and eighties of the last century, while the nineties are characterized as dry. The first decade of the twenty-first century on the territory of Serbia is characterized by pronounced extremes both regarding excessive moisture and the periods of great drought and heatwaves. In such extreme conditions, the occurrence of various types of weeds causes significant damage to crops. Various types of weeds can better stand unfavourable conditions both in wet and dry years because they have deeper and extended root system. They compete with crops for water and mineral matter, take over their living space and impede their growth and development.
