Biosecurity measures in Serbian farm production

The primary goal of the National Veterinary Service is implementation a sustainable system of domestic animals infectious diseases control and reduction of the incidence of farm animal technopathy and ethopathy diseases. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to build a stable organizational structure of the Veterinary Service system, increase the capacity of all stakeholders in the system and build appropriate competencies of veterinary experts. The basic activity in the domestic animals infectious diseases prevention and eradication is the introduction of the appropriate plans and programs of biosecurity measures. In the paper, the necessity and importance of the biosecurity measures introduction in cattle, pig and poultry farms with different capacities in our country is scrutinized. The main activities to be undertaken in order to effectively implement the most important biosecurity measures are given in this paper. These activities include the introduction of biosecurity measures and plans in the Program of animal health protection program, the definition of a questionnaire to assess biosecurity risks in animal production, biosecurity standards creation, stockmen, veterinarians and veterinary inspectors training and publishing guidelines, recommendations and instructions for continuing education. Effort to improve the level of livestock production biosecurity involves transformations in veterinarians thinking and change the focus from the treatment to a well-timed, thoughtful and effective preventive measures in prevention of infectious diseases, technopathy and ethopathy diseases, with the introduction of more effective policies and procedures that should become standard parts in production technology, such as isolation of farm animals, farm sanitation and traffic control animals. In order to stimulate biosecurity measures implementation, subventions for producers who achieved acceptable level of biosecurity need to be provided. In this way, a stable foundation for the realization of long-term goals aimed to achieve the desired state of health, the appropriate level of animal welfare, bosecurity in livestock production and health safety of animal origin food gradually will be built.
