Giardia infection is common in livestock and it has been reported frequently in young calves. Given the intensive nature of cattle industry, anthropozoonotic transmission is likely to occur frequently. The aim of present study was to evaluate the zoonotic potential of G. duodenalis in dairy calves, younger six months old, coming from farms of Palermo city. Fecal samples from dairy calves (both males and females), belonging to various farms, wee collected directly from rectum of each calf, examined by molecular approach based on DNA extraction and PCR-sequencing. The Giardia prevalence was calculated based on the total examined samples. The genotype E is consistent with the high prevalence in livestock animals in Italy and worldwide, whereas the presence of subtype A1 in calves indicates that these animals can be a source of G. duodenalis cysts that have the potential to infect also humans
