A comparative study of aleuron layer and starchy endosperm cells was conducted in vernalized and non-vernalized caryopsis of winter wheat (Triticum aesti-vum L. variety Mironovskaya) from the start of imbibition to formation of the seedling with leaf 5 centimeter length. It was shown that vernalization promotes utilization of endosperm starch grains. In non-vernalized caryopsis lysis of the starch grains goes on much slower. During vernalization the reserve substances of aleuron layer are utilized too. The protein vacuoles become swollen and lucid. The size and quantity of oleosome is reduced. However to the end of the experiment (the length of the first leaf is about 5 cm) amount of reserve substances remains high according to cell structure. In addition at this stage highly developed rough endoplasmic reticulum is formed in the layer of aleuron cells, the number of mitochondria and lysosomes increase, thereby the features characteristic of secretory tissues appear
