This study was carried out at Gezira Research Farm on the third week of July 2005 to evaluate the efficacy and selectivity of Samuria 50 EC and Pendikool 50 EC (new formulations of pendimethalin) for preemergence weed control in cotton in comparison with the standard Stomp 50 EC (pendimethalin), the weeded and the unweeded treatments. Samuria and Pendikool, at 0.6kg a.i./fed each, in mixture with Diuron at 0.2kg a.i./fed, irrespective of supplementary weeding, displayed excellent control (87-100%) of grasses throughout the season. Both products in mixture with Diuron, irrespective of supportive hand weeding, attained excellent control (90-96%) and satisfactory to excellent control (60-96%) of broad-leaved weeds early and late in the season, respectively. All herbicides treatments achieved reduction in weed biomass by 51-89% in comparison to the weedy check. Weed competition reduced plant population by 14% in comparison to the weeded control. All herbicides treatments had no phytotoxic effects on cotton. Unrestricted weed growth reduced seed cotton yield by 10 times in comparison to that of the weeded control. All herbicides treatments, significantly, outyielded the unweeded control except Samuria at 0.8kg a.i./fed without supplementary weeding. Samuria and Pendikool in mixture with Diuron with supportive hand weeding attained yield comparable to that of the weeded control and the standard Stomp + Diuron with supportive hand weeding
