An experiment was carried out at Gezira Research Station Farm to evaluate the efficacy and selectivity of Sharpen 50 EC (pendimethalin) for pre-emergence weed control in cotton in comparison to its standard Stomp 50 EC (pendimethalin). Weeded and unweeded treatments were included for comparison. Sharpen alone at 0.8kg a.i./fed or in mixture with Diuron at 0.6+0.2kg a.i./fed gave good to excellent control of grasses (70-92%) throughout the season, similar to its standard Stomp alone or in mixture with Diuron which attained good to excellent control of grasses (70-95%) during the whole season. Sharpen alone showed satisfactory (62%) and poor (22%) control of broad-leaved weeds early and late in the season, respectively. Sharpen in mixture with Diuron attained excellent (95%) and moderate (58%) control of broad-leaved weeds early and late in the season, respectively. When supplemented, it displayed excellent control (84%) late in the season. The standard Stomp in mixture with Diuron with and without supplementary weeding attained the same results. All herbicides treatments reduced weed ground cover by 62-94% in comparison to the unweeded control. All products treatments reduced weed biomass by 29-72% in comparison to the weedy check. Herbicides had no phytotoxic effects on plant population. Unrestricted weed growth reduced seed cotton yield by 10 folds in comparison to the weeded control. All herbicides treatments significantly outyielded the unweeded control by more than 3 folds. Sharpen in mixture with Diuron, with supplementary weeding, attained seed cotton yield comparable to that of the weeded control and the standard Stomp in mixture with Diuron with supplementary hand-weeding
