Weeds are one of the main limiting factors to maize production. No herbicide is, so far, recommended for weed control in maize in the Sudan. The efficacy of Guardian 84% EC (acetochlor) and Gesaprim 80 % (atrazine) was evaluated for weed control in Maize. Guardian alone at 0.63 _ 0.84 kg a.i./fed displayed excellent control (80 _ 92%) of grasses early in the season and moderate to excellent (63 _ 84%) effects at 8 weeks after sowing. The herbicide at 0.63 kg a.i./fed showed poor and inconsistent effects on broad-leaved weeds, however, at 0.84 kg a.i./fed it displayed moderate control (49 _ 60%) early in the season with poor and inconsistent effects late in the season. Atrazine alone displayed poor control of grasses and excellent and persistent control of broad-leaved weeds. Tank mixtures of Guardian at 0.42 kg a.i./fed with atrazine at 0.15 _ 0.2 kg a.i./fed consistently showed good to excellent control of both grasses (65 _ 79%) and broad-leaved weeds (68 _ 85%). The unweeded control produced the highest weed biomass at harvest. Guardian at 0.84 kg a.i./fed, Guardian at 0.42 kg a.i./fed tank mixed with atrazine at 0.2 kg a.i./fed consistently reduced weed biomass at harvest. Unrestricted weed growth reduced maize grain yield by 53 - 90%. All herbicides treatments, except Guardian alone at 0.21 _ 0.42 kg a.i./fed, consistently increased maize yield in comparison with the unweeded control. Supplementary weeding of herbicides treatments resulted in further improvement of weed control and maize yield in comparison with the respective treatment without supplementary weeding
