Non-detasseled single-cross hybrid KBSC 605 baby corn testing for processing

Commercial baby corn production with the use of fertile baby corn hybrids needs detasseling. As a consequence, it increases cost of production. The objective of this research was to test the non-detasseled single cross KBSC 605 baby corn for processing. KBSC 605 was planted in farmer's fields in extension areas of Agro-On Co., Ltd. In Krasiew, Nong Yasai district, Suphanburi province and Wangkwai, Nong Prue district, Kanchanaburi province in the 2008 dry season. Results showed that KBSC 605 gave the mean of good ear weight of 1,245.81 kg/ha higher than that of CP 468 by 7.62 percent but lower than PAC 271 by 8.77 percent. When separated the ranges and means of good ear weight to low (318.75-937.5), medium (943.75-1,562.50) and high (1,568.75-2,187.50) yieldsKBSC 605 gave the means of 796.38, 1,262.81 and 1,927.69 kg/ha higher than those of PAC 271 by 5.81, 3.20 and 8.08 percent and CP 468 by 19.86, 3.16 and 8.70 percent, respectively. KBSC 605 gave mean plant weight of 35.0 t/ha higher than those of PAC 271 and CP 468 by 3.70 and 19.15 percent, respectively. It also had mean good ear weight of 6.03 g/ear higher than that of PAC 271 by 16.18 percent but lower than CP 468 by 2.11 percent. Results of nutritional analysis showed that KBSC 605 possessed carbohydrate and fat similar to CP 468 but higher fat and protein than PAC 271. Moreover, it had high vitamin B3 and Ca. In addition, hybrid seed production of KBSC 605 was tested by planting male (PACB 421-S14-223):female (Ki 28 cms) rows in the ratio of 1:4, the cost of hybrid seed production was reduced due to no detasseling in female rows. From the results, KBSC 605 was acceptable to the farmers and the processing plant because of high yield, non-detasseling, high plant weight and good ear performance for processing.
