One of the most important measures in potato cultivation is weed control. Weeds can significantly reduce yields of potato, because it is a root crop sensitive to weeds, especially in the early stages of development. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of herbicides that are commonly found on our market and are permitted for use in this crop. These are the following products: metribuzin, rimsulfuron, pendimetalin, and fluazifop-p-butil. Apart from these products, a combination of metribuzin+rimsulfuron has also been used. To achieve the goal in the area of Tešanj, in 2010, the experiments were carried out on two sites - Miljanovci and Alibegovci, in randomized blocks design with four replications according to the methods defined by the EPPO. The tested variety of potato was Aladin. The time of application of herbicides was pre-emergence (metribuzin, pendimetalin) and post-emergence (fluazifop-p-butil, rimsulfuron). Effectiveness of herbicides was evaluated 40 days after the planting. The highest coefficient of efficiency at the Miljanovci site was obtained by metribuzin+rimsulfuron. The number of species, number of weed plants and the fresh weight of weeds with this combination was reduced by 79.2%, 92.3% and 92.5%, respectively. The average yield of potato on the first site ranged from 13.45 t/ha (untreated variant), up to 23.48 t/ha in the variant treated with metribuzin+rimsulfuron. At the Alibegovci site, the metribuzin+rimsulfuron combination also showed the highest degree of efficiency in the weed community. The coefficient of herbicides' efficiency was as follows: 35.7% for the number of species, 88.9% for weed plants, and 89.0% for the fresh weight. The yield average ranged from 10.04 t/ha on untreated variants to 17.36 t/ha on the plots treated with metribuzin. In addition to this herbicide, a combination of metribuzin+rimsulfuron also gave a significantly higher yield in relation to weed control. A comparison between the average yields achieved on the two sites shows that all herbicides except pendimetalin gave significantly higher yield relative to the control. With respect to individual sites, the average yield on Alibegovci reached 13.87 t/ha, and in Miljanovci 20.27 t/ha. The analysis of variance confirmed a significant difference between these two places, where yield in Miljanovci was by 46% higher.
