With purpose to study the formation of root mass and root collar in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) during the 2006-2009 in IFC-Pleven is carried out experimental activity with nine alfalfa varieties: Europe (France), Prista 2 (Obraztsov Chiflik, Ruse), Prista 3 (Obraztsov Chiflik, Ruse), Prista 4 (Obraztsov Chiflik, Ruse), Obnova 10 (IFC, Pleven), Pleven 6 (IFC, Pleven), Dara (IFC, Pleven), Multifoliate (Obraztsov Chiflik, Ruse) and Dama (IFC, Pleven). The greatest root mass formed varieties Obnova 10, Prista 3 and Prista 4 – by 15.7, 11.4 and 6.4% above the average for the group (1.40 g/plant) and the smallest one – varieties Pleven 6, Europe and Dama. The dynamics of root formation by years showed the most significant increase of root mass during second year of development (by 109.8% to the established 0.41 g/plant in the first year). In the third and fourth year the increase of root system was by 76.7 and 84.2% respectively. The diameter of root collar at harvest of the autumn regrowth during first year of alfalfa development was average 3.08 mm as in the second, third and fourth year the increase was by 36.7, 48.5 and 21.8% respectively. With the greatest collar diameter was Obnova 10 (5.79 mm), followed by Prista 4 (5.61 mm) and Pleven 6 (5.37 mm) and with the smallest one – Europe (5.07 mm) and Multifoliate (5.07 mm). The weight of alfalfa root mass correlated positively with the diameter of root collar (r=0.735).
