The relationship between stem volume changes of Norway spruce and water availability was studied during the growing season from April to October 2009 in a forest in central Czech Republic. As shown by our results the lack of soil water during a short period has a high impact on daily stem volume changes. We analyzed the variability of daily stem diameter of Norway spruce by comparing daily maximum, minimum, its difference and average diameter, and with environmental variables related to weather conditions and soil water content. We found out that the daily maximum, minimum and its difference were closest related to daily average water vapor deficits and precipitation. However, the degree of correlation between stem diameter changes and soil water availability was low, there is still a high dependence on the amount of precipitation.
