Implementation of deficit irrigation regime during vegetative stage in rice paddy fields has been shown no deleterious effects on rice yield. In this study striped stem borer (Chilo suppressalis) (SSB) damage symptoms, dead heart (DH) and white head (WH), were compared between deficit irrigated and ordinary irrigated (control) plots of Shiroodi variety, during 2009 and 2010. Percent DH and WH were 0.6% and 0, and 2.2% and 3.2% for treatment and control, respectively in 2009. The respective indices were 0.3% and 0, and 2.5% and 2.0% in 2010. Mean yield/ha was estimated 8300 and 8439 kg for treatment and 7858 and 8354 for control in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Non of the damage indices and/or mean yield was significantly different between two plots during the two years. In conclusion, implementation of deficit irrigation method in rice paddy fields has no drastic effects on SSB damage and/or yield gain. Moreover, no detrimental effects on some beneficial agents were detected for the two plot groups.
