The Effects of Mother Bulb size, Plant Density and Planting Date on Quantitative and Qualititative Traits of Red Rey Cultivar.

To determine the most appropriate sowing date, plant density and mother bulb size and their effects on quantitative trait of onion seeds ( Allium cepa L. CV. Red Ray ), the experiment was conducted at the research field of Seed and plant Improvement Institute in Karaj, Iran during two years ( 2008 and 2010 ). The experimental design was split split plot in base of completely randomized block design with three factors composed of sowing dates (t1= November 11, t2= March 6) as first factor, plant density (d1= 20, d2= 30, d3= 40 cm) as second factor and mother bulb size (s1= 35-50, s2= 50-65, and s3= 65-80 mm in diameter) as third factor with four replications. Year was main factor with 2 levels. The distance between two rows was 50 cm. Results showed that sowing date significantly affected on all traits except 1000 seed weight and umbel diameter. Plant density factor had significant effect only on seed yield and 1000 seed weight but mother bulb size had significant effect only on 1000 seed weight. The highest seed yield obtained at 6 th March planting date with 20 cm distances between plants on rows by planting of small bulbs (35-50 mm) and medium bulbs (50-65 mm). So these results can be recommended for Karaj region .
