Comparison of quantitative and qualitative forage yield on cold-regions alfalfa ecotypes in normal and limited irrigation.

To evaluate performance of cold regions alfalfa ecotypes in normal and limited irrigation regimes, this experiment was conducted in Randomized Complete Block Desigh (RCBD) with three replications in 7 locations (Karaj, Tabriz, Khoi, Mashad, Neishabour, Hamedan and Sanandaj) for 3 years since 2007. Eleven ecotypes (Ordoubad, Chaleshtar, Mohajeran, Galebani, Ghargholough, Famenin, Ghahavand, Selected Hamedani, Gharaghozlou, Sedghian and Malek-kandi) were included in this study. According to combined analysis of variance, mean squares of locations were significant at 1% probability level for fresh forage yield, dry forage yield and leaf to stem ratio. Also mean squares of irrigation regimes were significant for fresh forage yield and dry forage yield at 1% probability level and leaf to stem ratio at 5% probability level. Mean squares of ecotypes were significant only for fresh forage yield at 5% probability level. Year×location and irrigation×location interaction were significant for all of the traits at 1% probability level. Mean comparisons showed that the best ecotypes for fresh forage yield, dry forage yield and leaf to stem ratio was Famenin with 49/05 t/h, 13/93 t/h and 0/885 respectively. Also mean comparisons in normal and limited irrigation regimes showed that the best ecotypes for fresh forage yield, dry forage yield and leaf to stem ratio were Famernin with 59/08 t/h, Famenin with 16/44 t/h and Ordoubad with 0/843 in normal irrigation respectively and Ordoubad with 41/37 t/h, Galebani with 12 t/h and Famenin with 0/981 in limited irrigation regime respectively.
