By means of a methodological approach the present survey characterized the peasant farming systems of two localities in the San Clemente Country of the Talca province, Chile, from an economic and technical standpoint. For this purpose two categories of farmers were utilized: beneficiaries from the agrarian reform and small farmers. Technically speaking both farming systems did not show any differences. Both showed a very low degree of technology incorporation which was associated with a low productivity per hectare. These kinds of farmers use the family group hand labor hiring only occasionally external assistance. The economic production systems of the small farmers are orientated mainly to self consumption while those economic production systems of the agrarian reform beneficiaries orientate their efforts to meet the market demands. We are able to state that the animal production component plays an important role on the genesis of income for the peasantry.
