The experiments were conducted in the glass house of Plant Physiology Department, Bogor Research Institute for Food Crops in dry season of 1984. About 19 rice lines/varieties of lowland and upland were used to study the plant characteristics which might support the high yield and the lines/varieties which had more tolerance or resistance to drought. The results showed that there was no significant correlation between drought score and root length or root weight. Several rice lines had high root and straw ratio, i.e. IR29385-1c-1-Tb-2, B3894-17c-Sm-4-2-2, B3632j-Tb-26 and B4143d-Pn-169-17. But the other lines and varieties of B3913-18f-Tb-17, IR29385-1c-Tb-2, B3644e-159-Tb-2 and Cipunegara showed the best performance in root weight, root length, and root diameter. According to drought score, there were about 8 lines noted to be tolerant to drought. Only one line (B3644e-159-Tb-2) had about the same characteristic as Cipunegara which might support drought tolerance and high production at certain soil moisture condition. The rice lines or varieties should be tested under field condition to get some more data concerning tolerance or resistance to drought and yield.
