Extensivierung von intensiv bewirtschaftetem Grasland.

In Switzerland many farmers wonder why the extensification of previously intensively used grassland does not lead to flower-rich meadows. On the experimental farm Rossberg (520 m above sea-level) we have evaluated different extensification and reseeding procedures which may be suitable to develop a species-rich hay meadow (Arrhenatheretum) from an intensively used perennial ryegrass pasture. The strategies of extensification used, all without the application of manure, were: immediate reduction of the annual number of cuttings without oversowing; progressive or delayed reduction of the number of cuttings with and without oversowing of a seed mixture containing haymeadow-type grasses and clovers, and a seed mixture containing haymeadow-type wildflowers; cultivation of the soil followed by sowing the above-mentioned seed mixtures or by spreading the haygrass of a species-rich hay meadow; without cultivation. Main results: without the introduction of plants the number of species did not alter. Destroying the old sward and sowing a suitable seed mixture led to an Arrhenatheretum already after one year. The extensification with oversowing supported the change of species in a slow and retarded way and favoured primarily the establishment of grass species. In the uncultivated plots a strong diminution of species was observed.
