A high oleic sunflower mutation was attained by means of the dimethyl sulphate (DMS) chemical mutagen. There are different hypothesis as to the number and mode of action of genes that control high oleic acid content in sunflower seed oil. Results of the cytogenetic analysis in this study showed that the number and structure of chromosomes in the mutant lines and F1 hybrids did not change in relation to the normal line. The study results led to the conclusion that no such chromosomal aberrations as heterozygous translocation or inversion occurred that would be detectable at the cytological level.
