Effect of mineral nutrients on growth activity, stem histology and fibre yield was investigated in Corchorus capsularis L. cv. D 154 plant growth was found to be superior under well nourished condition. Plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, leaf weight per unit area, circumference of stem at the cut end, area of bark as well as stick were increased under such condition. Tall plants with the maximum stem circumference produced maximum fibre. The ratio of bark or fibre to stick yield per plant was high in plants with better growth activity. Area of fibre cell zones the trapezoid in the bark of these plants was also higher than that of the poor plants. Trapezoid number per unit area in a transverse section of the stem of poor plants, however, was higher than that of the better plants. It seemed that the area of fibre cells, not their number, was the basis of high fibre yield in better plants.
