The author performs a critical analysis of the traditional approach to the problematics pondering about the usability of the notion "town-village" as an analytical category. He presents besides the concept of the "centre-periphery relation" which seems to reflect better contemporary connections of settlement structures of various ranks. Beside traditional trend to migration from villages to town a reverse phenomenon, i.e. escape from town to village can be observed more and more often. At the same time in the countries which started to industrialize relatively late the massy inflow of rural population to towns changed the character of the latter so that some authors speak even of "rustification" of the town.
