The two strategies, under investigation at ICARDA for replacement of fallow with a legume crop, and replacement with self-regenerating pastures to increase livestock feedstuffs; phosphate application on native grasslands to improve the productivity and management of the grasslands overgrazed and subjected to severe soil erosion to develop the sustainable farming systems, and to encourage the growth of the legumes in particular; effect of long-term tillage systems on the stability of wheat/lentil rotation; and improving nitrogen fertilizer use efficiency on wheat through soil testing quantity environment x fertilizer response interactions and thus, produce more specifically targeted fertilizer recommendations are described. The first results of the effect of wheat stubble management on the productivity of contrasting farming systems, degradability of leaf and stem fractions of barley straw, improved production practices for lentil and chickpea, and Ceres-N wheat and barley models; and water harvesting introducing range plants, and sheep pastures in Baluchistan, Pakistan are reported.
