Combining ability for yield components of local [Yugoslav] and synthetic populations of maize (Zea mays L.).
1993
Vancetovic J. | Drinic G.
The combining abilities of eight maize populations (three synthetic and five local (Yugoslav) maize varieties) for four yield components (ear length, kernel row number, kernels per row and 1000 kernel weight) were investigated. The results showed that additive genetic effects had the highest influence on all the investigated characters, special combining ability x location interaction was not significant for any trait, while general combining ability (GCA) x location interaction was significant for all yield components. Therefore, all the investigated yield components could be improved by using composites derived from combinations of the appropriate populations. A negative correlation between GCA for 1000 kernel weight and kernel row number was observed.
