Pollution and water quality studies of some rivers and streams within the Ankobra Basin [Ghana]. Phase I.
1988
Osafo R.A.
Water quality survey, in addition to assessment of impact of industrialization on it, of River Ankobra and its tributaries in Western Region (Ghana) was carried out from May 1980 to February 1982. No regular pattern of increase or decrease in most of the physico-chemical parameters surveyed was observed. As a raw water source for treatment, for domestic purposes, the water quality of the river is good at the headwaters, satisfactory in some of the downstream waters and poor in industrial areas particularly near gold mining areas where extensive pollution with cyanide (as high a concentration as 64 mg/l at Prestea) is observed. The use of water at the downstream areas and at points of discharge of effluents poses hazards for both humans and agriculture especially fish farming.
