An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of harvesting date of rye and planting date of succeeding corn grown for silage on annual forage yield and quality of rye-corn double cropping system during the two-year period 1986-1987 at the Experimental Livestock Farm, College of Agriculture, Seoul National University, Suwon. Crude protein (CP) content and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of forage rye decreased with the later dates of harvesting, but acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents increased. Average CP, ADF, NDF contents and IVDMD of forage rye harvested on April 20 were 22.7, 24.7, 42.8, and 89.7 %, respectively, but those of rye harvested on May 13 were 12.2, 42.9, 74.4, and 70.7 %, respectively. Dry matter, CP and IVDDM yields of forage rye significantly increased (P<0.05) with the later dates of harvesting. Average dry matter yields of rye varieties harvested on April 20 and 30, and May 13 were 2,830, 4,062, and 7,814 Kg/ha, respectively. Dry matter, CP and IVDDM yields of Elbon (early) and Koolgrazer (Early-Medium) harvested at different dates significantly higher than those of Kodiak (late) with the exception of CP and IVDDM yields harvested on May 13. Dry matter yield of early maturing rye was markedly higher than that of late maturing rye when harvesting was specially made at the earlier date of April 20. Crude protein content and IVDMD of corn varieties were not consistent with planting dates and varieties, but ADF and NDF contents of early maturing corn were slightly higher than those of late maturing corn at the same harvesting date. Average dry matter, CP and IVDDM yields of corn varieties significantly decreased with the later dates of planting, but no varietal difference was found when planting was made at the same date. Average dry matter yields of corn varieties planted on April 20 and 30, and May 13 were 17,630, 15,945 and 13,300 Kg/hg, respectively.
