Experiments were performed in the years 2000-2001, on 67 Holstein-Fresian cows imported from France and 73 Polish Black-and-White cows during their third, 305-day lactation period. The aim of the studies was to determine the effect of the month of calving on the yield and composition of milk from these cows. It was found that the cows imported from France were characterized by a higher milk yield, as well as higher concentration of fat, protein, lactose and dry matter in milk than Polish Black-and-White cows. The highest milk yield was observed in the cows that calved in October (9924 kg) and December (9764 kg), and the lowest - in those which calved in April (6612 kg). The month of calving had no considerable influence on the content of fat, protein, lactose and dry matter in milk.
